Kevin Gordon

Dude’s a juke-joint professor emeritus“–Rolling Stone

A Louisiana native, now 20-year East Nashville resident, Kevin Gordon is a touring recording artist and songwriter. His latest release, Long Gone Time, has garnered high criticial praise, just like 2012’s Gloryland, which got rave reviews in The New York Times, USA Today, Rolling Stone, and many others.  The title track from his Down to the Well CD, a duet with Grammy winner Lucinda Williams, was featured on two prominent compilations: the Oxford American Southern Music Sampler, and No Depression: What It Sounds like, Volume 1. Gordon’s songs have been recorded by Keith Richards, Levon Helm, Hard Working Americans (Todd Snider), Irma Thomas, and others. Kevin also earned an MFA in poetry from the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop.

“The room fills up with a jolly crowd all revved-up after the Waco’s high energy set, and then it happens—after he rocks strongly for a bit, with his trademark insistent rhythms, he shifts gears.  Kevin’s intricate pickin’ and quiet storytelling absolutely take over and the room falls totally still.  You couldn’t have shut that crowd up with an assault rifle and a funeral, but Kevin’s spellbinding stories do the trick.  Dang, that’s impressive, almost miraculous.”–Obie Obermark, KNON, Dallas, 3/2015

“What just happened? I’m knocked out, I’m flat on my can. Where did Kevin Gordon come from and how have I missed him for so long?”–Jed Gottlieb, Boston Herald

“. . .Kevin Gordon lyrically seduced his fans at Jazz Fest as he spun musical tales of life in the conflicted modern South.”–New Orleans Times-Picayune

“Four stars… The sheer brilliance of the lyrics to Colfax/Step in Time alone justifies a top rating for the first album in seven years from this Southern-raised poet/rocker. Gordon sketches a not-so-simple portrait of a junior-high marching band on a bus trip, and every single image feels, tastes, smells and sounds absolutely true.”–USA Today, 2/14/12

“There’s nothing else around today quite like Kevin Gordon’s music. I’m a huge Kevin Gordon fan. Think of John Lee Hooker tied to the hard, imagistic poetry of William Carlos Williams, and you get a little bit of an idea. It’s something like trance blues, I suppose – but then you encounter the tangled, complex story lines of ‘Colfax’ or ‘Trying to Get to Memphis’ or ‘Bus to Shreveport.’ There really is no way to sum it up neatly – you just have to listen. And listen again. For the pure emotional pleasure of it. For the unmistakable, hard-driving passion of words and music, rocking together in rhythm.”–Peter Guralnick
